Amex stadium parking spaces approved for Falmer site

The Amex stadium could soon benefit from 800 extra parking spaces built on the site of the former Falmer High School.

It was one of several uses earmarked for the land in a report that has now been approved by Brighton and Hove City Council.

The need for extra parking has become more urgent since Brighton and Hove Albion’s planning application for an extra 8,000 seats at the stadium.

Council leader Bill Randall said: “While the club is extremely good at persuading fans to use alternatives to driving, it was expected to provide 1,000 parking spaces on the Falmer High School site as part of its original planning consent.

“Development of the academy [BACA] meant that this was not possible. This remaining land is therefore an important factor in ensuring a wide variety of transport options for the stadium.”

With the report’s approval, the club knows it will have the council’s backing if it submits a planning application for the parking spaces, subject to consent from the council’s planning committee.

Other suitable developments for the site identified in the council report were a new home for The Bridge Community Education Centre and university buildings built above the parking spaces.
