Read For Your Life

Emma Drew held a fantastically engaging day of speakers who approached the topic of reading as a ‘safe space’. Novelist Phillip Hesner kicked off the day’s talk, and Birmingham Poet Laureate Jo Skelt shared some of her works and thoughts on the function of reading as therapeutic. The onus today was on creating awareness about the value of reading for those people on the fringes of society, with speakers from Rise UK, City Reads and The Reader Organisation, who are doing actively brilliant things in our community through the tool of reading. Warren Matofsky captured the notion of today with the words; ‘Books do have side-effects.’
