Buses: Get on board

Brighton & Hove buses are the best way to experience the breathtaking heights and sites of Sussex. This week: Seven Sisters Country park

You may not realise it but there are all sorts of interesting and unusual places to visit on the Brighton & Hove bus network – stretching out to Eastbourne, the South Downs, and Steyning to name but a few.
Seven Sisters Country Park, named after the spectacular chalk cliffs that border the English Channel, provides a combination of coastal views, river runs and lush grassland for a truly scenic nature experience. There’s no shortage of countryside to explore and vibrant wildlife to examine while you journey on forest and beach walks.

Aside from the traditional village pubs, there are numerous family attractions and facilities, including camping and canoeing along the Cuckmere Haven Valley.
The Seven Sisters Visitors’ Centre is a good start to finding out about the area. They can advise you of the best walks to suit your interests, ability and how much time to allow. And there’s also a marvellous café!

Beachy Head is located in the park and is the name given to Britain’s highest chalk sea cliffs. Although it’s got quite the quaint name, Beachy Head has a fascinating and tumultuous history. From the unfortunate shipwrecks near the Belle Tout Lighthouse leading to its decommission in 1902 to the Battle of Beachy Head during the Nine Years’ War in 1690, the area is brimming with history to discover. Acting as the start of the eastern end of the South Downs Way – it’s even known as the ‘gateway’ to the South Downs National Park!

The Beachy Head Countryside Centre is your one and only stop for all things Beachy Head, including a shop with gifts and guides. It also contains The Sussex Gallery, a showcase of the work of local artists. They’ve created The Downland Experience, a free exhibition focusing on the history of the Downlands and Beachy Head.

Getting there
Route 12, 12A, 12X (Mon-Fri only) – up to every 15 minutes.
Route 13X – up to every 60 minutes, Sundays and Public Holidays only. The 13X goes into the park and serves the Beachy Head Visitor Centre, from 19th April the service will also run on a Saturday and from 14th June – 31st August it will run every day and up to every 30 minutes on Sundays in that period.
