Al Murray: One Man, One Guvnor

This 20th anniversary show from Al Murray’s Pub Landlord is testament to the character’s enduring mass appeal. His commanding presence, incredibly quick wit and beer-sloshing, bug-eyed physical comedy all still raise belly laughs, however they dwindled in an over-long first half. There was the slightly mucky feeling of being at a political rally with a confused leader, rather than a comedy gig; while a muddying of waters under the banner of “common sense” can be one of Murray’s cleverest tricks, here it often lacked the flashes of clarity that firmly mark it out as satire.
