Going Underground

It was a real treat to be entertained by Seth Morgan in the premier performance of Guy Picot’s new one-man-show. Beguiled by story and song, a thoroughly appreciative, discerning audience were introduced to the fey romance and stale reality of a busker’s life. The Story is based on the real-life experience of busker, Nigel Francis, who attended the performance. Morgan played the part with wit and pathos. We were told of decades of busking antics, busking philosophy and busking love with no more than a guitar, a hat and a beautiful voice. There was a melting, cool crooning of Buddy Holly’s ‘True Love Ways’, some carefully chosen Beatles tunes, a sublime ‘God Only Knows’ and a host of other busking classics. We sang along to American Pie, albeit tentatively. Morgan’s vocal dexterity and skilful interpretation of the song lyrics conveyed a thoughtful honouring of a lifetime of music. The tale led us from the grimy London underground to tranquil continental evenings and reminded us of how things have changed since the 80s. Proceedings were helped along by Ross Gurney-Randall’s subtle direction that was invisible in the performance and only appeared when you thought about it later. I’ve heard on the grapevine there are plans to perform in other imaginative venues around Brighton, so look out for it…. I’m looking forward to seeing it again.
