How does one start to write about an evening of dance that was, to the non-dance-professional eye, faultless. The first piece Some Other Time, saw not only exquisite movement from three pairs of dancers but from a set that could only be seen as extended choreography as panels drifted from one formation to another, propelled by concealed dancers.
In Mutual Comfort two pairs demonstrated that razor sharp precision could be delivered with a liquid fluidity that created both intimacy and conflict. In Solo three male dancers performed a work deeply routed in the classical form but extended by a modernity that made the whole not only witty but breathtakingly athletic.
The final piece Cacti was a fine example of how a company can use dance forms of all kinds to create a work of pure entertainment, exuberance and joy. A stage filled with dancers, once again in control of the set, delivered an extraordinarily energetic, comedic and precise piece that reminded me that modern dance can incorporate fun, an element so often missing. I don’t think that I was the only person who left the Dome with a huge smile on my face.
