Growing Pains – Joshua Glavin
The woes of a disillusioned 23-year-old, yet it still attracted an audience of all ages. In the lad’s untidy bedroom his dreams and heartaches are expressed in rap and tap, with a God-like voice-over and backing tunes.
The city that produced ‘Stomp’ is ready for more innovation and Glavin’s story-telling is much more mature than the character he portrays. His command of cross-rhythms is masterly although for the most part not flashy. It’s best when he smiles to address the audience directly, the only music coming from his phenomenal feet. That’s his authentic voice, and not a sequin in sight!
