BREMF – Vocal ensemble masterclass and showcase with Eamonn Dougan

Although the event was originally programmed to feature three young professional vocal ensembles, the fact that only the Manchester Singers could ultimately attend was beneficial to the evening. The audience were treated to in-depth feedback and suggestions from Eamonn Dougan (conductor of The Sixteen), ranging from the technically fascinating (the diphthong, the curse of being English and mumbling, the adding of shape and colour) to the simple and aesthetic (the importance of ironing one’s shirt before a performance). Dougan was charismatic and engaging, and the Manchester Singers showed immense promise, performing complicated work confidently, and featuring some talented voices in a rich soundworld. Their attempt to unearth rare music was also commendable, and the evening overall was insightful and entertaining.
