8 things that sum up Brighton’s reaction to Trump
Last night saw thousands of people take to the streets of Brighton in protest at Donald Trumps travel ban on people from seven muslim majority countries.
The protest started at 6PM at Bartholemew Square, home to Brighton Town Hall, but had to be closed as more people than expected arrived. The 2000-strong crowd then marched from the town hall to Brighton Station, and back to the seafront, bringing traffic in the city centre to a standstill.
Despite only being organised 24 hours in advance, an impressive number of people turned up, waving home made placards and chanting anti-trump slogans. At the station, a rude version of DJ Ötzi’s Hey Baby was chanted by thousands, later going viral on the internet.
The number of people there, and the fact that a standstill protest turned into a march, took police by surprise, although they added that it was mainly peaceful and that there have been no arrests.
Here are some of the best tweets and images of the protests. (Some banners may be NSFW).
