1 Saxophonist Trevor Watts doesn’t play live often so this intimate ‘bring your own booze’ gig at West Hill Hall is a thrilling improvisatory treat. Wolf Eyes are a great noise band and there’s also support from local free jazz band Bolide so £12 is good value for money.

2 Guy Lloyd is Vince Venus, who is part of SOCK, and the reformed band play at Latest Music Bar this Saturday. Also performing will be freestyle rapper Gramski who will open the night with a set inspired by audience participation, and ‘chap rapper’ Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer.

3 Tamsin Greig’s turn as Malvolia has been described as “resplendent” by thestage.co.uk, so I’m excited about her take on the role in Shakespeare’s comedy of mistaken identity. The acclaimed new version also features Doon Mackichan from Smack The Pony, so any British TV comedy fans will be well catered for.

4 I’m always a sucker for a show ridden with four or five star reviews from a wide range of publications, and Kieran Hurley’s show Heads Up at The Marlborough fits the bill. The show asks what people would do if they found themselves facing the end of the world, including teenage girls, finance workers, celebrities, and the writing and storytelling have been lauded.

Comedy with Victoria Nangle
5 Times they are a-changing – providing ample ponderings for the publican, politician and philosopher, Al Murray’s Pub Landlord. With two performances in one day of his new show ‘Let’s Go Backwards Together’, you can expect raucous laughter mixing intelligent satire from simple great observational comedy from the blazer-wearing man himself.

6 The Edinburgh preview season is here! An absolute treat to start your ball rolling of half-formed shows and glimpses of comedic genius is a double header from two highly acclaimed comics – Phil Jerrod and Ivo Graham. Jerrod explores why it’s still worth trying to be happy in the face of terribleness, whilst Graham brings his unapologetic Eton and Oxford
alumnus perspective to bear on the general world around him.

Arts with Brighton’s Arty
7 If you’re stuck in the mindset that galleries are intimidating and only for the arty-initiated, you clearly haven’t poked your nose into the delightful Zimmer Stewart Gallery in Arundel. Head there between 8 and 29 April and you’re in for a real treat as owner and curator James Stewart is welcoming back Tom Farthing with a new series of paintings.
Although this latest collection is entitled Still Life Paintings, you can expect a few observational figurative works that the artist is known for – all captivating contemporary studies with timeless appeal. It’s worth the trip for a chat with James himself, and once you’ve been you’ll want to go back again.
