1 Kool & The Gang are popular across several generations, older people might remember theirs hits such as ‘Celebration’, whereas those who might remember the ’90s more keenly will have heard their samples in acts ranging from Janet Jackson to Beastie Boys. There’s still tickets available to join the timeless funk band’s party.

2 Zu are a glorious amalgam of genres, fusing metal, math rock, noise and electronics. They’ve shared the stage with Faith No More, Lightning Bolt and Sonic Youth too, so they have real rock pedigree and you get an idea of the experimental sort of music you can expect.

3 The summer of opera at Glyndebourne is one of the jewels in Sussex’s arts crown, and a UK premiere for Cavalli’s opera ‘Hipermestra’ is something to be excited about. Cavalli was a baroque composer, which means that his style will sound closer to composers such as Handel or Monteverdi than people like Beethoven or Stravinsky.

Comedy with Victoria Nangle

5 Only a big star can make the Theatre Royal Brighton an intimate gig – and Michael McIntyre is that big star. Trying out new material for his forthcoming tour (which will no doubt be back in town at the Brighton Centre in good time) this a glimpse behind the curtain of McIntyre’s creative process. Although, having seen his warm ups before, the show will already be pretty much set – he’s just exercising his live comedy audience muscles.
Theatre Royal Brighton, Monday 19 June, 8pm, £26.65

6 The All-Star Stand-Up Tour comes to Worthing, hosted by acclaimed compere Jarred Christmas. King of the one-liners Canadian Stewart Francis is joined by Phoenix Night’s Justin Moorhouse and Mike Gunn (stepping in for Jim Tavare) – as seen on Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow. Lots of laughs!
Connaught Theatre, Worthing, Wednesday 14 June, 7.30pm, £21.50

Arts with Brighton’s Arty

7 What better way to mark the start of the sunny season than a trip to Arundel’s Zimmer Stewart Gallery for its annual Summer Exhibition. This year curator James Stewart is welcoming back a collection of artists that have not been seen in ZSG for a while, and also introducing a new sculptor Ken Newlan whose conceptual works are based on portraiture, natural experience and interaction with non-representational geometrical forms. Look forward also to witty portraits by Holly Frean, Elaine Pamphilon’s colourful, confident and almost folk-art style paintings, abstract expressionist works by Anthony Frost, and much more. Until 29 July.
