Brighton Lights: What to do in the city – w/c Tuesday 15th August

Music & Entertainment with Joe Fuller

1-2

1 The Afghan Whigs are a great rock band who fused soul into a ‘90s rock aesthetic in a range of strong albums. Head to bit.ly/2hBoCRD to read my interview with frontman/guitarist Greg Dulli
to find out more, including his thoughts on how gigs are like sex and why New Orleans is the most inspirational city in the world.
Concorde 2, 17 August, 7.30pm, £20

2 Lambchop are generally described as alt-country but have explored a wider range of textures, including a lush electronic and vocoder-filled sound on brilliant 2016 album FLOTUS. Seek out a stream of the quiet, flutteringly beautiful NIV for a taste of it.
De La Warr Pavilion, 18 August, 7pm, £20

3-4

3 Never The Bride are a kaleidoscope of different musical factors, with reputable vocal coach Nikki Lamborn fronting the band, which Bob Harris has called “one of the best live bands in Britain”. If you want to hear “the best female rock voice” (according to Roger Daltrey) then head to the Brunswick this weekend.
The Brunswick, 19 August, 7pm, £13

4 18 year old Morgan M-James, a Sussex Downs College student, has amassed over half a million views on his YouTube channel. Influences range from Max Milner to Gabrielle Aplin in his big pop songs, squarely aiming for those stadium singalongs.
Komedia, 17 August, 7.30pm, £5

6 Are you sitting comfortably? Then you’re ready for a story night. Titter sets some of Brighton’s interesting emerging comics the task of not only performing their sets but also writing a story specifically for this very evening.
So… never-before-heard one-of-a-kind treats for a warm summer evening, organised by Jess Fergy. Cocoa not required.
Caroline Of Brunswick, Saturday 19 August, 8pm, £5

Arts with Brighton’s Arty

7 It’s never too soon to look forward to an exciting new arty event in the city. And this September Phoenix will be hosting the inaugural Brighton Print Fair – a 10-day exhibition promoting printmaking in its various forms. From classic printmaking, letterpress, posters, screen-printed gig posters to print products, the show will be a celebration of printmakers and printmaking.
The main gallery at Phoenix Brighton will be hung with unframed prints, giving the exhibition a sense of unity, and allowing customers to choose the frame they wish. The rest of the venue will be used for printmaking classes, talks, demonstration, one-day specials, a 20th-Century printmakers exhibition as well as an in-house framer and a café. A true festival!
From 15 to 24 September.
