1 I’ve seen Colin Stetson before and he is a brilliant performer, utilising techniques such as circular breathing and clicking keys to create a hypnotic, captivating sound. He’s performed with an array of artists ranging from Tom Waits to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and puts on a singular show that has to be heard live to be fully appreciate.

2 Julie Byrne’s debut album Not Even Happiness is a highly listenable, enjoyable record, but backed up with good songs too. If you like a good singer songwriter of an ethereal bent then this gig certainly offers great value: support act Nadia Reid performs similarly contemplative contemporary folk.

3 Mozart’s operas are brimming with brilliant melodies and are a fun romp too. Così fan tutte is one of the best, and you can hear it sung in English by 6 professional singers, accompanied by piano, at Brighton Open Air Theatre this Sunday afternoon.

4 Writer and comedian Mishka Shubaly has been described as “a chronicler of mankind’s darkest impulses”. You can witness the maelstrom yourself: he’s performing at LMB next week with the controversial rock’n’roll of Birdcloud.

5 A comedy institution, Sir Ken Dodd (as announced in the 2017 New Year’s Honours List) brings his famous Happiness Tour to Brighton. With a reputation for paying little attention to end-times, you’ll be tickled pink with his puns and proliferation of made-up words, as well as songs ranging from opera to ballads. Treat yourself to this national treasure.

6 Start your weekend early – or make it last until the absolute edge of Sunday night – with Krater Comedy Club. Former Hollyoaks star turned comic James Redmond hosts Thursday’s fun, with Damian Clark on MC duties the rest of the weekend. Join on Friday and Saturday for raucous times, or on Thursday and Sunday for more mellow laughter. With top circuit acts evey night.

7 There are still two weekends to indulge in Lewes’ annual artfest – and this year’s Artwave is better than ever. Five hundred artists and makers from across the district are taking part in over 140 different venues, with free visits to private homes, workshop spaces, gardens, studios and galleries showcasing the broadest variety of visual art.
