1 alt-J are a great pop band with strong albums: I enjoy the simplicity and clarity of their keyboards, bass, guitars and drums as well as their varied sound, ranging from baroque pop to more funky rock. The first few tracks on ‘This Is All Yours’ are some of their best, if you want to know where to start.
Brighton Centre, 4 September, 6.30pm, From £33.45

2 Band Of Horses are of a more indie than pop ballad bent however, and they’re playing an exclusive UK venue gig at the De La Warr. Listen to ‘The Funeral’ if you want to get in the right widescreen anthem mood.
De La Warr Pavilion, 5 September, 7pm, £22.50

3 One of my arts highlights last year was vrLAB at the Old Market, so I’m thrilled to be heading to #TOMtech 2017 this year. First up is the ‘digital forest’ of Habitats, which sees musical trees made of lasers creating vibrant patterns of light and sound. This looks like a potential word-of-mouth sensation for the city, and tickets are selling fast.
The Old Market, 29 Aug to 10 Sep

4 White Feather Boxer is the story of a boxer who was also a Conscientious Objector. Elderly trainer Jimmy can’t face his demons from the past but takes on an angry new demon in the form of female boxer Jo. Former audience members have praised the production for being “stimulating and entertaining”.

Joe-Pasquale-2

5 King Of The Jungle (back in 2004) and prime minister of the silly (for all time), Joe Pasquale brings his latest show to Worthing promising to explain why the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse will be arriving on My Little Ponies, and what Action Man held with his gripping hands. Marking thirty years in comedy, variety, quiz show hosting this year, and still going strong.
Pavilion Theatre, Worthing, Thurday 31 August, 7.30pm, £19/18/16

BarbaraNice_medium

6 September hits the ground running with Mrs Barbara Nice taking up headlining duties at gay-friendly monthly night Bent Double. A firm favourite, bringing suburbia’s cutting edge to comedy – in character – she is joined by award-winning Larry Dean, turning Glasgow toughnut stereotypes on their head, and further support from Harriet Dyer. All skillfully corralled by the ever-funny favourite MC that is Zoe Lyons.
Komedia, Sunday 3 September, 7.30pm, £12/9/5

Arts with Brighton’s Arty

7 If you’ve ever visited The Wolf at the Door studio during Artists Open Houses you’ll have encountered the creative skills of multi-talented, multi-media artist Jill Tattersall. So we’re thrilled to hear that her inspired painting Murmuration 2 has been shortlisted for The National Open Art Competition Prize 2017. Alongside the official judging there’s also a public vote, so show your support at nationalopenart.org

8 Trafalgar Street’s Dynamite Gallery has gained a reputation for constantly pulling in elegant, edgy and unusual work. It’s hosting a solo show this September by one of our favourite local artists: Sam Hewitt. This is an artist that draws with such heart, and belief in his subject, that whatever he puts his brush to, he pulls you in. Don’t miss!
