1 Gilad Atzmon’s concert The Spirit Of Trane will see the saxophonist interpreting the music of John Coltrane at the Ropetackle this Thursday. Robert Wyatt has called him the “best musician living in the world today”, and The Blockheads band member will be exploring some truly beautiful music, so this looks like a fairly safe ticket for a music lover.

2 The Human League are proud to still be a pop group, and are quoted as relishing the fact that they “haven’t gone rock like Depeche Mode or Simple Minds”. Support comes from Marc Almond and The South.

3 The Friday lunchtime series at the Unitarian Church welcomes pianist Joss Peach this week. He will be performing originals in this show, taking inspiration from jazz and film styles.

4 I saw Roddy Woomble performing in his band Idlewild around 13 years ago at the Corn Exchange, when I was about 16. They put on a great show, so I feel sentimental towards the man. He’s been releasing solo material for over ten years that leans more to the singer-songwriter folk side of the guitar rock spectrum.

Comedy with Victoria Nangle
5 A night of mayhem ensues when the Noise Next Door’s Comedy Lock-In! is on the cards. Playing a series of games, this tight four-man team take their cues from you – the audience – and play off one another, and their guests, to entertain. Oh yes, Pippa Evans and Keith Farnan are joining forces with the Noise as their guests, to perform their own sets and to take part in several games. Oodles of fun.

6 A one-off comedy sketch-tacular arrives in the form of #SketchTember. No one is who they seem, with a line-up entirely consisting of sketch groups and character comics. Headlining this rambunctious delight are Jon & Nath, fresh back from their run in the Edinburgh Fringe. With host duties performed by Ant McEwan.

And big cheers go to Jacqueline Hammond for getting through to the second round of judging in the National Art Open Competition with ‘Life’s a Beach’.
