Mae Martin: Dope

Mae Martin is open and funny and completely relatable whilst also being utterly unique. This Canadian former prodigy shared her life story charmingly, flexing her not insubstantial funny bones apparently effortlessly in her award-nominated debut solo tour show.

She’s self-aware of the construct of the show, stepping out of it momentarily as the fun carries her away with extra detail that she says isn’t jokes, but finds punchlines for nevertheless. It’s a delightful knack. Martin is honest about her addictions, from Bette Midler to hard drugs, emphasising that she’s alright now at regular points, caringly deflating any jeopardy that she may have built up to be larger than she might feel comfortable with. It’s indicative of the atmosphere that she fosters of good humour and safety.

As an autobiographical show it blooms, with a slightly raggedy end as Martin continues to work out how past events are still affecting her. It feels open-ended, which sits right with her age – now 30 – and continuing exploration of life. That you for the wonder, Mae – it’s great to be reminded of it.
