3 Brighton & Hove’s first annual Poetry Competition and Festival features the fabulous headliner of poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, plus Brighton’s very own punk poet – Attila the Stockbroker, and acts by Hammer and Tongue, plus a poetry slam competition featuring the students from the Brighton University.

4 An interrogation and a spate of gruesome murders in a totalitarian state create a contrasting backdrop to a twisted imagination rich with equally gruesome and equally grim tales. A ragtag gaggle of performers and musicians bring a new twist to Martin McDonagh’s award-winning play The Pillowman. Promising dark humour and a stark Orwellian reality.

5 Mr Ed Gamble has risen in profile steadily over the years, from getting into scrapes with his former podcast partner in crime Ray Peacock, to stepping out on his own and appearing on Mock The Week, Drunk History, Conan and Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central, gathering fans as his fame rises to match the dizzy height of his carefully swept back quiff. After a successful tour last year, he’s back with an entirely new stand-up show – Mammoth.

6 Intelligent, cutting, sharply funny and unflinchingly honest, Simon Amstell had already set his stand-up style way back when he hosted Popworld and Never Mind The Buzzcocks. Having more recently picked up acclaim with his Netflix programme Carnage, and newly penned film Benjamin in the wings of post production, Amstell is back at the mic with his new stand-up show What is This?

7 Marking the centenary of the birth of many classic (think Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie) jazz icons, Nu Civilisation Orchestra (originally Tomorrow’s Warriors Jazz Orchestra) delivers a spectacular evening combining archive film portraits with big band classics featuring some of the finest jazz musicians of the moment. Opening the show for these outstanding artists are talented young musicians from six Brighton schools performing as part of The Jazz Ticket schools programme.
