Atomos

Wayne McGregor’s dance/film piece Atomos does indeed feel like it’s made up of distinct units, with 3D glasses handed out to be used with 3D TVs that were present for more than half of the show. The visuals on screen mostly served to frustrate however, what was intriguing after five minutes grew dull and distracting after fifteen, with repetitive visuals doing little to stimulate the senses, especially when compared to the fine movements of the ensemble, filled with strong lines and good extensions.

A murmuration of black birds against an orange background did work well to imbue the stage with a golden hue, and the 3D costume film moments were visually striking in a slick monochrome sort of way. The use of technology hinted at more effective options for the future then, although the best lighting moment of the show was a dramatic effect where the dancers appeared to jutter from side to side. The dance piece itself was emotively spry too, with a sense of undulating connection and enveloping movements, accentuated by a melodious soundtrack from A Winged Victory For The Sullen.
