Argenta Trio
It initially suggested a Palm Court trio. Debussy aged 18 was still finding his voice but his Piano Trio in G is a rather lovely work. Those same few opening bars also told us this resurrected work was in the hands of some very sensitive and accomplished musicians.
Much more unfamiliar but still charming was ‘Plainscapes’ by Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks. Depicting a bird-filled coppice at dawn, it required a much quieter venue.
Although another juvenile work, Shostakovich’s C minor Piano Trio, written aged 16 during treatment for TB, contains some of his signature moments, especially in the cello part.
