To honour the recent re-release of Jean Renoir’s La Grande Illusion, we have five copies of the beautifully restored film up for grabs, courtesy of Studio Canal and just in time for its 75th anniversary. Aristocratic Captain de Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay), mechanic Lieutenant Marechal (Jean Gabin) and wealthy Jewish banker Rosenthal (Marcel Dalio) are all thrown together as prisoners of the Germans in World War I. After an attempt to escape, they are recaptured and held in an imposing fortress by German, Van Rauffenstein (Eric Von Stroheim). Boeldieu and Rauffenstein strike up a friendship, which confuses loyalties and has tragic consequences.
