Shutterland

Theatre troupe Rhum and Clay clearly took inspiration from the likes of ‘Brazil’ and Kafka’s ‘The Trial’ for this physical theatre piece that was effectively staged, sharply performed and surprisingly funny. Set in a steampunk-esque dystopia the play followed an everyman who learns the truth about his existence. Unlike other physical theatre shows this never lost its sense of playfulness and some of the funniest moments were where it broke the fourth wall. The narrative had a couple of plot holes and a few of the gags were rather samey but its visual inventiveness and strong performances shone through.
