Music: The Mojo Fins
With the release of a new EP, don’t miss the Mojos rising
Brighton band The Mojo Fins have been quietly going about the business of making records and gigging for a number of years, but their story is a fascinating, albeit tragic one. In 2007, band member Jon Chandler died in a road accident. He was responsible for the magnificently brooding ‘Pinata Face’, which was subsequently released as a single later that year, with all proceeds going to the RoadPeace charity.
The band, who along with Chandler, were made up of Stephen Brett, Steve Hoile and Dave Russell, made the difficult decision to continue as The Mojo Fins, recruiting fourth member Adam Luke Atkins, and set about recording their debut album The Sound That I Still Hear.
In 2011, the band decamped to the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales (apparently the world’s first residential studio and responsible for a who’s who of rock giants, including Queen, who recorded ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ there) and with producer Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers etc) made the follow up album Shake the Darkness, a more expansive and textured affair that showcased the band’s penchant for dreamy, fragile yet epic soundscapes, topped up by Brett’s poetic outpourings.
They’ve just released ‘The Spirit EP’, four new tracks also recorded at Rockfield, with Dave Eringa once again in the producers chair. Their music continues to evolve and mature, but always weaving intricate melodies within the textured and thoughtful sounds.
