The Martlets Noon Walk
The girls have walked for the Martlets Hospice, so on Sunday 14 October it’s up to the men and boys!
The Martlets Noon Walk is one of those rare events in Brighton and Hove – it’s a men-only, 13 mile sponsored walk and a chance for men and boys (aged 12+) from all parts of the city to walk together to support the work of their local hospice. It’s a fundraising walk just for men to remember friends, loved ones or colleagues who have been affected by cancer or terminal illness.
“Many charity fundraising events in Brighton are exclusively for women, but there are very few just for men. Over 800 women from the city turned out on 15 June this year to walk for the Martlets Hospice. This year’s Noon Walk will be one of the Hospice’s key fundraising events in our 15th anniversary year. We hope men and boys from across the city will be inspired to take part on 14 October,” says Roger French, Chair of Trustees at the Martlets.
It is a great day out walking with family, mates and, if you want, well behaved dogs too. Think of the Noon Walk as healthy exercise but having the real purpose of helping local people get the compassionate and high quality end of life care they deserve!

The walk will start at noon at the Probiz County Cricket Ground in Hove. Walkers will make their way along the seafront and cliff tops to Saltdean Lido for a refreshment pit stop, before returning to the cricket ground where well-earned pints and a medal will be waiting! There are plenty of pubs on the route in case you need to top up fuel tanks. There will also be special medals and treats for the dogs as well.
You can create some rivalry in raising money for the Martlets by joining as a business, club or social team. Then you can be in with a chance of winning the Noon Walk Cup – kindly sponsored by Wilson Sandford – awarded to the team that raises the most money. There are also prizes for the best fancy dress participants – the more outrageous the costumes the better!
The Martlets Hospice cares for people affected by terminal illness living in and around Brighton and Hove. All their services are provided free of charge. Since opening in 1997, staff and volunteers have cared for and supported over 22,000 local people. As less than a third of their funding comes from the NHS, support from everybody in the community is absolutely vital. The Hospice provides end of life care services to adults with terminal illness including cancer. Facilities and services include an 18-bed In-Patient Unit and Hospice-at-Home Services. Practical and emotional support is also offered to the families and carers of patients including helping them through bereavement. The Hospice is also developing additional services for outpatients and those living at home needing end of life care and support.
The Martlets’ main aim is to maximise the quality of life for patients and they strive to support patient choice, dignity and independence. They aim to help people when they need it most.
Now in its fourth year, the Noon Walk has raised nearly £60,000. As in the past, the money from this year’s walk will be used directly to fund services.
