Cass McCombs
There’s something special about Cass McCombs, and the gifted songwriter performed a moving set with a tight backing band playing beautifully. The Haunt was a suitably strange choice for his esoteric alt-folk-rock, and the sparsely populated nightclub somehow enhanced the aura of quality and rarity in his superb songs and delicate vocal delivery. ‘County Line’ was a highlight, swaying with a falsetto vocal and a seductively smooth guitar outro. Other songs were more jagged and rocky than on record, perfectly changing the mood to keep one’s mind alert. No posturing or gimmicks here, just a great artist that deserves a bigger audience.
