The Importance of Being Earnest
What a splendid start to Eastbourne’s Autumn Season! With Oscar Wilde’s ever-green play everything must be just right: the sets, the atmosphere and costumes all come up to scratch. The delivery, steady and clear, meant we heard every familiar line; so far, so good. The timing, the inflexions, the extra bits of business, and then – how will she say “Handbag”? Well, don’t worry, you won’t be disappointed. Diane Fletcher is exquisite as Lady Bracknell, authoritative not bullying, a lady of her time. Tom Butcher excels as Jack Worthing and we enjoy a fresh, elegant production of our dear old play.

My third version of this wonderful play and might just well be my favourite. None of the acting could be faulted. It was a fresh delivery and stage settings were superb, even invoking a round of applause from the audience when the second act commenced! Loved every minute of it.
