Le Nozzle di Figaro

Glyndebourne tour launches with a slightly pared down production of this year’s Mozart, and what a joy. The odd late sixties setting, reminiscent of the film ‘Stardust’, all hippy rock’n’roll glamour, was at times distracting, especially the terrible ‘dad’ dancing, but nothing could detract from the sublime singing and stunning palatial moorish settings. Guido Loconsolo was a cheeky Figaro, Joèlle Harvey a knowing Susanna and John Moore every inch the cocky Count Almavira. But soaring above them all was Canadian soprano Layla Claire whose stunning arias had the audience on the edges of their seats and her dramatic portrayal was equal to her vocal achievement.
