The Yellow Sofa

Julian Philips’ chamber-scale opera, with libretto by Edward Kemp, is based on a novella by 19th century Portuguese writer Eca de Queiros.

This is a tale of late 19th century Lisbon bourgouisie in which businessman Godofredo discovers his wife Ludovina and his business partner Machado in a compromising situation on his favourite yellow sofa – a wedding present from his parents. Godofredo initially threatens to deal with this humiliating affair with violence but thanks to the interference and advice of his friends, drama is averted and in the final conclusion order is once again established and life goes on as before.

This gently satirical comedy is set in pleasingly old-fashioned style by Philips and the score makes great use of pastiche and parody, in particular the magnificent use of the Portugese fado folk-style as the voice of the sofa – delivered in vivacious mezzo from Lauren Easton.

Gareth Hancock conducts the brilliant pit ensemble of strings, guitars and piano.

Despite the beautifully minimal set, the busy staging is distracting at times but the satire and wit of the original story are beautifully observed.

The Yellow Sofa is an original Glyndebourne commission, first presented as part of the Jerwood Chorus Development Scheme during the 2009 Festival, the cast features past and present members of the Glyndebourne Chorus.
