Schools close as snow falls over Brighton and Hove

The housing and homelessness charity Brighton Housing Trust (BHT) beat its £12,000 fundraising target over the festive season.

A range of events to raise money for BHT’s First Base day centre netted almost £16,300.

Events ranged from Christmas fairs, street collections and a social media campaign which saw 12 films following the progress of homeless men and women accessing services at First Base.

Part of the aim of the fundraising was to ensure that homeless men and women would have somewhere warm and dry to go over Christmas.

BHT fundraising officer Liz Davies said: “We cannot thank everyone who has supported us enough for their generosity.

“£16,295.24 is the most BHT has ever raised over Christmas and we feel very grateful that people have been so generous at a time when economically things are incredibly tough.

“The money raised enabled First Base to be open over the Christmas period to offer support, advice, warmth and comfort at what can be a very difficult and lonely time for the people using its services.”

BHT chief executive Andy Winter said: “I am particularly grateful for the 19 Brighton and Hove city councillors, of all parties, who braved the cold on Saturdays during December to help with our street collection.”
