Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, Pupils of the Yehudi Menuhin School (violins), Barry Wordsworth (conductor)

Concerts presenting up-and-coming soloists are a certain delight. This one was more than most as brother and sister Samuel (16) and Louisa-Rose (12) Staples may be young but they played Bach’s ‘Double Violin Concerto’ with the assurance and delicacy of seasoned performers. They were very sensitively supported by the BPO, in particular by Alistair Young on the harpsichord.

Mozart’s ‘Ballet from Idomeneo’ made a refreshingly light overture to this concert and his 40th Symphony a satisfying second half. Mozart, Bach and future stars of the concert platform – what better portents of Spring and a golden future for music in Brighton!
