Brighton cinema screens breast cancer documentary
A Sussex University seminar is being held at a Brighton cinema this evening (Tuesday 5 March) to raise awareness of breast cancer.
The special session is part of the “NGender Seminar Series” and is being held at Komedia in Gardner Street, Brighton, to mark International Women’s Day.
The evening includes a screening of the documentary Pink Ribbons Inc followed by a question and answer session with an expert panel.
The organisers said: “Breast cancer campaigns are all around us. Everything from marathons to bake sales are regularly organised to raise money for breast cancer.
“More and more companies have ‘pink ribbon products’ – teddy bears, perfume and bras to name a few – with sales that allegedly result in donations to breast cancer programmes and charities.
“But who is really benefiting from all this pink paraphernalia? Where is the truth about women’s health and well-being in the discourse that accompanies promotions and fundraising?
“What about women’s rights to accurate and comprehensive information about their health and treatment options?
“Who is responsible for keeping the pink ribbon machinery alive? And who is responsible for regulating it?
“These questions and others can be put to our experts.”
The panel members include Helen Lynn, facilitator at the Alliance for Cancer Prevention, Dr Grazia de Michele, a breast cancer patient and advocate, and Cathie Malhouitre, a member of the Breast Cancer Consortium.
Professor Gillian Bendelow, from Sussex University, will chair the session.
This event is partly funded by the University of Sussex Doctoral School Researcher Led Initiative Fund.
The £3 ticket price is to £3 to cover costs.
