Brighton Dome Easter Concert, Michael Maine (organ)

The stalls at the Dome were full again. Michael Maine, even in his work clothes as a modest Eastbourne curate, is a magnificent showman, most certainly when he’s sitting at the organ. From Suppé’s ‘Light Cavalry Overture’ to Widor’s ‘Toccata’ (played exuberantly from memory) this was a programme worthy of the Dome’s magnificent organ. ‘In Your Easter Bonnet’ and Mascagni’s operatic ‘Easter Hymn’ kept it seasonal, and in the Mario Lanza number ‘Be My love’, Michael’s splendid tenor voice rose above the organ. His enthusiasm was matched by the rapt attention of his many fans. They’d have stayed all afternoon!
