The Philosophy Garden

Talks, discussions and performances will be hosted by top-class philosophers, writers, storytellers and musicians in a beautiful and intimate setting, as part of Brighton Fringe.

These talks and performances are for anyone who is interested in ideas; for people who like listening to those who have thought carefully about their subjects; for people who want to engage in discussion and for those who love traditional stories.

Philosophy and storytelling may seem an unusual combination but they both seek to answer questions about the nature of reality and how we can flourish. All academic subjects have emerged from philosophy, and the arts have spilled-out from storytelling. Both have been brought together with musical accompaniment as the world’s first festival devoted to Philosophy and Storytelling.

The events take place at The Warren, a spectacular pop up venue in central Brighton. Some events will take place in The Burrow, a tranquil, elemental 49 seat space. Other events will take place in The Warren Main Theatre which seats 150.

Contributors include Steve Jones, (Geneticist, writer) talk: ‘The Joy of Sects: The Bible Retold as Science’ Ben Haggarty, (Storyteller), performing MR SANDMAN –Bringer of Dreams and Nightmares; followed by a philosophical panel discussion about the performance with Paul Levy and others.
Richard Robinson, (Scientist) Talk ‘The story of the Universe in 13.72 mins’
Miles Leeson, (Philosopher, Chichester University) Talk: ‘The Philosophical Novel’
Andrew Chitty, (philosopher, Sussex University) Talk: ‘Who owns stories?’
Kefi Chadwick(playwright) Catherine Smith (poet) Mary Hampton (singer) in discussion,‘Telling stories in plays, poems and songs’.
Peter Chand, (Indian Storyteller), performing GRIMMS’ SHEESHA, teasing out the Indian heritage of Grimms’ Tales. Preceeded by a talk /discussion about how he created his performance. Mary Hampton(singer songwriter), Gary Goodman(poet) performing poems and folk songs. Other musicians and singers include Sharon Lewis & Kirstin McLement, Rachel Ries & Emily Baker, The Halo Project.
