Blue Aeroplanes

A double bill of vintage Bristolian indie heroes began well with ex-Strangelove leader Patrick Duff’s hushed, spiritual troubadour musings. The headliners, returning after a seven year hiatus with a new album and an anniversary reissue of ‘Beatsongs’, still feature non-musician dancer Wojtek – going at it like a primitive Chas Smash, and the dominating singer Gerard Langley. The partly-spoken lyrics were delivered with relish as the three guitars’ spiky attacks powered psychedelic garage classics ‘Yr Own World’ and ‘Breaking In My Heart’, the closing song on which original guitarist Richard Bell jammed, bringing a great night to a suitably chaotic climax.
