Pensioner sentenced over death of Brighton motorcyclist

A 69-year-old man has been sentenced for causing a Brighton motorcyclist’s death by careless driving.

The victim was 34-year-old Jacek Sawa, of Stephens Road in Hollingdean, who died in August last year.

Emergency services were called to Davigdor Road in Hove at 6.25am on Tuesday 28 August to a report of a crash involving a motorcyclist and a car. Mr Sawa died at the scene.

At Lewes Crown Court on Friday (21 June) Wayne Metcalfe, 69, of Clifton Road, Newhaven, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and driving with defective eyesight.

He was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years, disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to do 100 hours community service.

Sergeant Neil Walker, from the Sussex Police Road Policing Team, said: “This was a very sad incident which has greatly affected all parties involved.

“I am pleased Metcalfe pleaded guilty to the charges he faced.

“He has accepted full responsibility for his actions throughout and the sentence passed by the court reflects this.”
