Tom Russell

A packed pub, including a contingent from Russell’s one-time home of Norway, were treated to an evening of great stories and amazing music from the multi-faceted troubadour. Accompanied by an equally talented guitarist Thad Beckman, Russell’s repertoire mostly consisted of border tales based on his current residence in El Paso but, such is his colourful life, he also included a West African-flavoured protest song and a brace of pugilist-themed numbers – all underpinned by a large dose of cynicism. With his deep and tremulous voice, the Johnny Cash medley was a fitting end to an excellent night.
