Ten Brighton and Hove burglars jailed

Ten burglars from Brighton and Hove have been jailed during a recent crackdown, Sussex Police said.

The crackdown, known as Operation Magpie, is countywide.

Among them was Daniel Sallis, 27, from Brighton, who was jailed for three and a half years after he was caught with cufflinks worth £16,000.

He had the cufflinks and other similar items with him when police officers stopped him in Shoreham.

The convicted burglar admitted handling stolen goods, carrying tools to carry out a burglary in Brighton and escaping from custody.

Sallis, of Bexhill Road, Woodingdean, had been on the run for almost three months when he was arrested in March.

He had previously escaped from an officer who was arresting him on suspicion of minor offences in December.

The jewellery had been taken during burglaries in Haywards Heath and Lindfield in the week after Christmas last year.

His sentence was the result of good work by Brighton and Hove’s Priority Crime Unit since Monday 1 April, Sussex Police said.

Another burglar who has been jailed since then is Anthony Bowles, 32, of Preston Road, Brighton. He was sentenced to four years in prison for breaking into five homes at the end of January.

He already had convictions for burglary when he was arrested after being identified on CCTV footage using a bank card stolen in one of the offences.

Joseph Carr, 48, of Totland Road, Brighton, had five previous convictions for burglary even before he broke into a home in Greenleas, Hove, in March. He was jailed for four years when he appeared in court.

Anthony Harrison, 35, of Victoria Terrace, Hove, was jailed for two years and six months. He was convicted of breaking into homes in Seafield Road, Hove, in November, and Marine Avenue, Hove, in March.

Zinnedine Ammouchi, 37, of Hollingdean Terrace, Brighton, was ordered to spend seven years in prison after he was convicted of breaking into five homes, voyeurism and breaching a sexual offences prevention order.

The judge recommended that he should be deported after he has served his sentence.

Darren Hogarth, 43, of Locks Crescent, Portslade, appeared at Lewes Crown Court last month. He was jailed for three years for breaking into a home in Beaconsfield Road, Portslade, in March.

Lee Witts, 38, of Gordon Road, Fishersgate, was jailed for five years. He was convicted of breaking into two homes in Hove Park Road, Hove, and trying to break into another home in the road. He was also convicted of three charges of handling stolen goods.

Shahzad Kareem was jailed for 20 months after he admitted breaking into homes in Ditchling Rise, Chatsworth Road, Roundhill Crescent, Stanford Avenue, Montpelier Road and Regency Square between March and June.

The 42-year-old, of Fitch Drive, Bevendean, had stolen items worth more than £10,000 from the property, some of which were recovered and returned to the victims.

Jamie Turner, 31, of Grand Parade, Brighton, and Lynden David, 49, of Cromwell Road, Hove, were both jailed for two and a half years for burglary.

Detective Inspector Clare Shiel said: “Being the victim of a break-in is a particularly traumatic event as it often leaves people feeling fearful in their own homes.

“Getting these offenders off the streets has made the people of Sussex less likely to be a victim of burglary, meaning fewer victims will face the upset that a break-in causes.”
