Brighton after dark: 28 August 2013

Bmusic

Are you creative, keen & want to make exciting music television?
When Latest TV goes live on air Bmusic will be driving the production of the music orientated programming to discover, promote, document and shout with pride about all that makes our corner of the world a diverse and celebrated musical hotbed.

February saw us launch our YouTube channel, youtube.com/thisisBmusic, with a pilot episode of Noise Reel, our entertainment/news and gossip show. Since this time we’ve had many features and many more shows hit our channel for our viewing pleasure.

Bmusic need more eager and productive volunteers to help us with all aspects of professional programme creation, including but not limited to; interviewers, presenters, camera operatives, editors, video graphics and animation designers, researchers and sound technicians.
You might even have a great idea for a series of shows that Bmusic can help you develop and produce for future broadcast.

Previous experience isn’t necessary as what we value above all is initiative and enthusiasm, plus specific training on a variety of things can be arranged through Latest TV.

This is the perfect time to get involved as we grow so please come and join us to find out more at one of our team meetings happening fortnightly.

Our next gathering of minds is at The Soverign, Tuesday 3 September 2013.
We hope to see you there! With thanks, The Bmusic Team.
Further details will be posted on our social media pages: www.facebook.com/BmusicTV and @Bmusic_TV on Twitter.

Sade Ali picks out the true brighton club characters

The top 20 weird and wonderful people you will see in a Brighton club!

1.The DJ stalker – The person standing as close to the DJ as possible, hoping to either make friends or just pretend is their friend.
2.The drink thief – Usually the most intoxicated person in the club, if they find a drink unattended, they’re drinking it.
3.The story teller – That one person, normally in the smoking area. The one who is persistent to tell anyone that will listen their whole life story.
4.The bad man – The guy who will never dance, he will just stand there with his drink and try and look as intimidating as possible.
5.The DJ – It normally helps if they’re there – and more than often have the strangest personality.
6.That girl– That one girl who has absolutely no care to what she looks like, she will dance however she wants all night long and end up being
carried home.
7.The joker – The guy in the smoking area, quite often Irish, who just tells the lamest jokes all night long.
8.The toilet lady/man – They will try and charge you £5 for one spray of perfume. And it will be from the pound shop.
9.The celebrity – The one person everyone loves, always gives praise to and will do anything to look cool in front of.
10.The gang of dancers – A small group of people who can all dance really well and will nine times out of ten start a dance circle.
11.The guy who thinks he can dance – He is the one who lingers around the gang of dancers, but unfortunately cannot actually dance.
12.The crap dancers– The group that cannot dance, but disguise it by purposely throwing funny dance moves, e.g the running man.
13.The hater – the one who cannot actually get into the club, so they will stand outside the smoking area all night dancing to the music and trying to talk to people through the fence.
14.The big spender – Always equipped with a bottle of champagne, and will aim to buy every person in the club a drink.
15.The perve – The guy who will do anything to get ‘anyone’ back to his… He always leaves alone.
16.The untouchables – The group of tarted up girls who think they’re too good for everyone.
17.The hood rat – The girl in Nike Air Max, a leopard print coat and giant gold earrings.
18.The hippy – Either with tatty dreads, hippy pants or multi-coloured clothing.
19.The drink spiller – The one who, no matter what, will spill their drink.
20.The observers – The group that will just watch all of the above people all night and laugh at everyone.

Brighton Noise

Andy Hinton on this week’s best gigs
After the festival lull gigs are starting to go up on the site at Usain
Bolt speed.

There’s some great stuff coming up, The Wave Pictures (maybe the most indie of all indie bands). The wonderful Lanterns On The Lake whose beautiful debut was a highlight of a couple of years ago, the brilliant brass infested live hip-hop of Lazy Habits, the genius rhyming of Scroobius Pip with his sidekick Dan Le Sac supplying the beats.

If anyone has got any cash left after shelling out their hundreds of pounds to see Leonard Cohen at the Centre there’s plenty going on this week (imagine how pissed off you’d be if he didn’t play ‘Suzanne’ – just a thought).

As much as I’d love to see Leonard there’s actually an equally classy gig on the same night at St George’s Church. The Be Good Tanyas have been about for years and after taking a slight hiatus brought out A Collection 2000-2012 last year. Despite being from Canada they have perfected Americana. Three women, voices as smooth as silk, their influences are folk (as in proper American folk), bluegrass, country. Just listen to The Littlest Birds and you’ll be hooked. And in St George’s Church this gig will be perfection.

On Thursday at The Green Door Store there’s a night of electronic/dance music with Benin City, Dr/Dr and Kanzi. It doesn’t kick off until 11pm but listening to the bands sounds well worth it if you’re prepared for a late night, and it’s free entry.

At The Hope on Sunday there’s the latest project of David Iver, Black Yaya. As Alex Flynn says: “Armed with just a guitar and harmonica alongside an occasional sample use, this is set to be a gripping evening of stripped back brilliantly written songs from his new album of Eerie Themes & Tales of Revenge & Murder played in their simplest form by a musician who continues to prove his relevance and importance in the modern music industry”.

To round off the week Crocodiles are at Sticky Mike’s. “Their danceable shoegaze is far removed from the shouty, noise rock of their previous bands,” says Carmen Jose and is more in the vein of Primal Scream that The Jesus And Mary Chain.
