Wave: Health & beauty news & reviews to see you through autumn

De-stress with yoga at Revitalise

This autumn, we’re spending time reducing our stress levels at Revitalise. After the summer it’s easy to get caught up in bad eating habits, spend more time sat indoors and less time active. The shorter days and longer, darker evenings can also affect our mood. Latest 7’s Sharon Caple took on a yoga course at Revitalise to stay active and unwind…

At Revitalise there are options for beginners and advanced. It can vary week by week which we like, and it also depends massively on your teacher. Alexa Garside has an amazing ability to work with you individually and takes time out to get to know you, which gives you the confidence to try some poses you may find difficult in other classes. Each week, Alexa concentrates on different parts of the body and explains the importance and the benefits of each pose/movement.

Vinyasa yoga is all about the breath and flowing movements. It’s great for you physically as it leaves you feeling energised; it also helps mentally by focusing on the breath to clear any tension and stress you may have throughout your day and life! For ease, you can drop in to a yoga class at Revitalise or sign up for the six-week course. The classes are small, with a maximum of eight people, meaning Alexa can make sure all the postures are done correctly! For further ease, mats/blocks are supplied but you can bring you own. Vinyasa yoga is great whether you’re a total beginner or if you been doing it for a while. Revitalise is central, the rooms are clean and warm, and Alexa is one of the nicest Yoga teachers we’ve ever met!

We’re reading

Dream Time by Sarah Starr. It’s time to curl up with a good book. On first glance, this may appear like a ‘dreams explained’ book with its mellow cover and scrolling title font, but it is in fact a novel, and the perfect story to curl up with on evenings indoors. Set in the 1970s, during a gap year in Australia, the story follows Rachel, who learns how the ancient Aborigines lived a secret walking dream. And so she embarks on the route herself. Easy to read and descriptive in its settings, this is a must read for every adventurer or just for anyone who’s looking to escape reality for a while.

The CBT-Pot – Learning To Play Your Mind by Dheeresh Turnbell.
Our second selection is a heavier read, but ideal for anyone who needs a reality check. ‘Learning To Play Your Mind’ is written by local author Dheeresh Turnbell (right) and launched in Brighton last month.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an increasingly popular self help therapy to overcome anxieties/negative feelings. This book is text heavy – literally and figuratively it has a lot to take on board. There are clear headers though, and easy sections so you can just turn to a chapter at any given time. There are visual tips and techniques from ‘hot cross buns’ to ‘vicious daisies’, all designed to change your way of thinking. Mindfulness training, Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) are all explored.

Tackle the ‘faulty feelometer’, tune in to ‘Depression FM’ – but only for half hour each day – and live with a more positive outlook. A great aid to assist CBT therapy or for those who are feeling stuck in a rut; this is a look at how CBT can help.
