Russian State Ballet & Opera House: Romeo & Juliet

Russian State Ballet and Opera House finished their run of shows in Eastbourne with the most popular love story of all: Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. Set to a live orchestra, every note clearly conveyed the action on stage: the romance between the pair and, most enrapturing of all, the anger that fuels the feud between the two families, evident every time Juliet’s parents were on stage. The dance between Juliet and Father Lorenzo was as moving as the shared time between Romeo and Juliet, perhaps moreso because we were aware of the events to follow, the orchestra effectively increasing the tension in this tragic tale tenfold. A beautiful set and Prokofiev’s familiar evocative score made the night complete, whilst the ballet company astounded with their agility.
