Celebcity with Jo Brooks: New boy band Lawson
The next big thing
Last week the queue for The Haunt’s live music showcase was off the hook as the hottest up-and-coming boy band of the moment took to the stage. Lawson, who’s drummer Adam Pitts hails from Brighton, interestingly named themselves after a surgeon who performed a life-saving operation on their singer/songwriter, Andy, and since this epiphany it seems the band have gone from strength to strength. Fresh from supporting Avril Lavigne and Will Young on their UK tours, with their ‘robustly melodic guitar-pop anthems’, Lawson will next be seen in Brighton supporting The Wanted on their arena tour starting in Feb. If you fancy catching the guys before they hit the big time, be sure to get your hands on some tickets for The Wanted’s gig at The Brighton Centre on 20 February. Keep an ear out for their debut single rumoured to be coming out in the spring. Check them out at www.lawsonofficial.com and www.twitter.com/lawsonofficial and www.facebook.com/lawsonofficial
Robin on ice
Friday 13 January saw the UK premiere of the annual blade runner extravaganza that is Holiday on Ice. This year’s offering, Tropicana, was choreographed by my old mate and Brighton resident Robin Cousins. Robin took time out from being head judge of ITV1’s hit show Dancing On Ice, to personally host the opening night – he even put his skates back on while taking the mike! The show was gloriously spectacular, with all its usually glitz, glamour, outlandish costumes and with a soundtrack solely by musical legend Barry Manilow – it really hit the skating spot. Tropicana runs at the Brighton Centre until 29 January.
Twilight delights
Guy and Andrea were delighted this week when new band Cover Drive popped into the station for a chat. The band are about to release their debut single ‘Twilight’ on 22 January – already a hit on the airplay chart and they’ve already supported Rihanna so I am sure they will be huge.
Andrea said: “They are very cheery – they bring the Barbados weather with them and even showed us their tattoos!” Andrea thought that Jamar looks like Bruno Mars and I agree – apparently he gets that a lot! Listen out for the interview on Juice FM soon.
Little mix-ing it up
It seems their beef with the Brighton-based charity Rhythmix hasn’t put Tulisa’s ‘little muffins’ off the city forever. X Factor winners Little Mix have decided to relocate to the seaside in order to record their debut album in preparation for the first tour – beginning in February. Jesy Nelson of the band said that she had already taken well to the city, taking to jogging along the front each morning as part of her exercise routine – might we possibly see her in this year’s marathon?!
