Stronger than yesterday: KeraStraight at Trevor Sorbie Brighton

Despite a fear of getting Britney Spears’ ‘Stronger’ track in your head with the above headline (sorry!), it had to be said as this is the best way I can describe the KeraStraight treatment. It’s taken haircare to a whole new level and Brighton’s Trevor Sorbie Salon is a pioneer in the trademark treatment.

My interest in KeraStraight was first piqued when a colleague had the treatment done in preparation for her wedding. When she came in the office I couldn’t believe that her gorgeous, silky hair had not been subjected to a lengthy blow-dry and a lot of time with her straightening iron. Yet she assured me it was simply a ‘wash and go’ thanks to KeraStraight, which had left her hair manageable and in great condition. I had to find out more…

When I meet Jon Moore, a global ambassador for KeraStraight from Trevor Sorbie Brighton, I am given an information-packed treatment (purely for research purposes, of course. General clients are welcome to stick their head in a magazine or unwind with a glass of wine during the treatment). Jon is enthusiastic about the brand as it is something he strongly believes in, and the reason for this, quite simply, is because it works. While the ‘80s was all about the perm, this decade is most definitely about KeraStraight, the non-permanent hair straightening method.

What’s wrong with my trusty GHDs?
This was my first question to Jon. It turns out: lots. Using hair irons every other day was drying out my hair and making it brittle, leaving short wispy pieces around my face. I’d got better. It used to be a daily date with my GHDs but I could see what they were doing to my hair – with the heat equivalent to an oven roasting your dinner. I’d cut back, but couldn’t go cold turkey. Like many women, I was caught in a Catch 22: my hair condition was worsening, but I rectified this (visually at least) with irons. Meanwhile the condition was depleting.

First up was a cut. It’s not a necessity before KeraStraight but it is recommended. I didn’t want dry, uneven split ends even more prominent after the straightening treatment. With my hair cut to a healthier length, Jon applied the newly available KS Ultimate treatment. It’s applied as a hair colour would be, and is white in colour with no strong smell. Put simply, Jon was adding keratin (protein) to my over coloured, over straightened hair. Keratin is the main component of hair and nails but an injection boost through KeraStraight was much needed for my overstyled locks. The treatment takes a few hours, but with results that last as long as three months, it’s a good time and money investment in the long run – especially with the time saved away from the straighteners. Once the treatment is rinsed and hair is blow-dried, straighteners are used for one last time to lock in the keratin and ‘set’ the style. Unlike the old Brazilian blow-dry method where you couldn’t tuck your hair behind your ears or wear glasses on your head for fear of kinking the style, your daily routine can be resumed directly after KeraStraight treatment.

Back to the headline: this was the biggest change I noticed straight away with my hair. It was immediately stronger, squeaky clean and had a bounce back to it that had been absent for a long time. Just by gently tugging on the ends of my hair, I could feel the improved elasticity and strength from the roots to the ends. The GHDs have been put at the back of a cupboard, away from temptation, and I haven’t looked back.

Is KeraStraight for me?
