Brighton & Hove City Council
Jason Kitcat on Brighton’s tourist industry
Our tourism industry is thriving, with visitor numbers continuing to grow. But we cannot be complacent; tourists are comparing us with cities across the world. Our city’s pull has been its continual reinvention and the diversity of its attractions.
The seafront is clearly a major part of what brings people to visit us. We have succeeded thanks to the incredible infrastructure the Victorians left us. Sadly it is now reaching the end of its life, and the repair bill is estimated to be at least £70 million pounds, if not significantly more.
That ageing legacy is particularly telling in the area around the West Pier, including Preston Street, which has long awaited regeneration. That’s why we are glad that plans for a government loan to bring the i360 tower to the area have been approved. It also has strong support from local resident and business groups, the Local Enterprise Partnership and others, including nearby hotels and venues.
We are fortunate to have the team behind the hugely successful London Eye ready to build their next landmark attraction in our city. Many other cities would give anything to attract such an opportunity. The figures behind the i360’s business plan are very robust; they have been independently checked three times over by some of the world’s leading tourism experts. Even if the i360 performed at similar levels to Portsmouth’s Spinnaker tower, which despite public perception has made over £3m profit for their council, then the loans would be repaid.
At a time of huge financial need the council would greatly benefit from new income generated by the i360 deal, whilst the surrounding area would finally get much needed regeneration. A new landmark from a world class team with a proven track record is a unique opportunity for our city. Let’s welcome it.
