Sade Ali’s night of Mrisi
Last Wednesday I decided to step away from my weekly routine and go somewhere new. QM records hold a monthly open mic event above Audio. Knowing one of the acts (Mrisi) I was already excited to go as I knew he would put on a good performance. Me being me, I arrived a bit late so had missed the first few acts.
WolfLung, an all male band, were the first band I got to see and it was only their second gig but they were naturals. For a very laid-back band they did have a lot of personality in their music and the vocalist was awesome. They were very indie and to be honest that’s not really my selected genre of music but I really enjoyed their songs. Next on stage were a few more guys (I didnt catch their name) but instead of being indie they rapped.
It was interesting to see something so urban against a live band. Finally, at the end of the night Mrisi took the stage. The saying ‘save the best till last’ is definitely an appropriate statement here. Mrisi has so much energy when he performs and had people out of their seats dancing. My favourite track he performed was ‘Vodoo’. He also performed another track about the benefit cuts and the system. He rapped about people in college fighting back. He put on a moving performance but in a way that made you feel happy. Very clever.

Alastair Reid on the week’s best gigs
This week is more packed full of quality than a tin of Christmas chocolates so bear with me while I try to fit everything in. This week is overstuffed. If you want a sultry songstress in your Tuesday night then Melting Vinyl have got your back, hosting the wonderful, Marissa Nadler at Komedia, supported by ‘neo-traditional’ folk in Death Vessel.
On Wednesday, everyone should go see Merlin Tonto at the Cowley Club. Merlin Tonto involves members of Speak Galactic, Japanese Sweets and Cinemascopes, so for those familiar with the Brighton scene that should
be enough of a draw in itself. Special. For those who aren’t familiar, this will be a hypnotic experiment in kraut ambience from a band on the up.
Get there early before you can’t get there at all.
If you like things a little noisier, The Ex are at Sticky Mike’s. The Ex have turned out more than 50 records since 1979, ranging from anarchist punk to the spine-melting collaboration with Ethiopian jazzsaxophanist Gétatchèw Mèkurya in 2007. Which incarnation of the aging Swedish rockers turns up is unknown but with such stellar support in Cold Pumas and The Sticks just get down there for the whole thing. Please.
Get down to Bermuda Triangle on Thursday where Tigercub are this week’s medium channelling the ghost of early ’90s grunge for the launch of single ‘Blue Blood’. Our own Chris Kusmiski, who you may have read on these pages before, puts them up there with Sonic Youth and Mudhoney, I’d chuck in a healthy amount of Nirvarna in ‘Blue Blood’, and recommend you get your tickets now.
One Inch Badge carry their relentlessly high-taste to the Concorde 2 on Friday with Blood Red Shoes, coming home after seducing the world in support of their fourth full-length, Jazz Life, dirtier than ever. Those there from the beginning will call it polished but lead track ‘Cold’ is filthier than most of what you’d find in the charts, like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs with Lars Ulrich on drums. Better than it sounds.
Sleaford Mods are the pick of a crowded Saturday, bringing the pair’s blue-collar rock from Nottingham down to the Prince Albert. With track names like ‘Wage Don’t Fit’ and ‘Jobseeker’ you can guess the subject and the sound doesn’t disappoint.
Finally, go see Milk & Biscuits, Cuddly Shark and Prince Vaseline at Blind Tiger on Sunday because they’re brilliant.
