Seafront march and demo taking place in Brighton
More than a hundred people took part in the heavily policed March for England on Brighton seafront this afternoon (Sunday 27 April).
The marchers, many of whom made their way from Brighton Station and gathered in the Brighthelm pub in West Street beforehand, were met by many more protesters.
They were given a largely hostile reception as they walked a revised route along the A259 King’s Road from the corner of Middle Street to Pool Valley and back.
The route was revised after a hole appeared in King’s Road near the bottom of West Street on Friday morning (25 April).
Protesters gathered in Queen’s Road to give those taking part in the March for England a noisy send-off as they made their way back to Brighton Station.
Sussex Police kept the protesters back and shepherded the marchers to the station.
The force is expected to publish details of any arrests early this evening.
At 3.15pm Brighton and Hove Buses published an updated warning about severe disruption to its services.
The bus company said on its website: “There is severe disruption in the city centre due to the March for England. The march was due to finish at 2pm but currently shows no signs of ending.”
Traffic was congested anyway, in part because of the seafront road closure resulting from the subsidence.
