Glyndebourne’s Jerwood Young Artists

Four confidently up-and-coming singers, supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and accompanied brilliantly by Gary Matthewson (piano), performed a selection of mainly operatic favourites from Handel to Britten, party-pieces all and perfect Festival programming.

Anna Rajah (soprano) was perhaps too full-voiced for Pamina but had such control that it worked. Her voice was better suited to her Romantic repertoire. Joshua Owen Mills (a heroic tenor) and Daniel Shelvey (baritone) both have lovely voices but stolid stage presence. Padraic Rowan a rich bass-baritone sang with the most joyous animation and characterisation. I look forward to hearing more of his bass range.
