Man rescued from Brighton flat fire

Firefighters led a man to safety when a chip pan caught fire at a flat in Brighton at the weekend.

Three crews from Brighton, Hove and Roedean were sent to tackle the fire in Mayflower Square, in the New England Quarter, Brighton.

They were called out shortly after 12.20pm on Sunday (18 May) when smoke and flames were seen coming out of a kitchen window.

After rescuing the man inside the flat, he was treated by paramedics for the effects of breathing in smoke.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews tackled the blaze wearing breathing apparatus and used two hose reel jets.

“The Fire Victim Support Unit was requested, along with a representative from Brighton and Hove City Council, to assist with the rehousing of the occupant.

“The fire was caused by a chip pan alight and it’s important to be aware that more than half of accidental fires at home are started by cooking.”
