Fournier Trio

Haydn’s ‘A Major Piano Trio’ began this concert so elegantly, who could tell that the young stars had just dashed from the station, confounded by a late train? So far, so good, although the acoustic favoured the piano. The opening chords of Bridge’s ‘C Minor Phantasie’ generated a totally different climate, as if after a fine Earl Grey someone started pouring cocktails, spirited and richly textured.

They heightened the atmosphere further with Ravel’s ‘A Major Trio’, edgy and exquisite. Outside, torrential rain during its melancholic ‘Passacaille’ turned to sun for the ‘Final’. Piazzolla’s ‘Oblivion’ concluded, a delightfully bitter-sweet encore.
