Colin Hoult: Characthorse

Purportedly a story that Hoult wrote when he was eight, the stream-of-consciousness quest plot of Characthorse doesn’t quite hang together; it’s more a framework upon which to hang monologues and surprisingly elaborate one-man sketches. Wisely, Hoult recognises this and playfully mocks the slightly flimsy story. This aside, the writing and performance are both spot on throughout. Even the most absurd characters feel real and fully formed, and the comedy comes from the characterisation and never any cheap jokes. Colin Hoult is peerless when it comes to this style of comedy and Characthorse did not disappoint.
