Brighton Festival – Aquinas Piano Trio

The large repertoire for ensembles comprising violin, cello and piano has traditionally represented a challenge to players. Fail to negotiate a careful balance between the varying volumes of the instruments at your peril. In today’s lunchtime concert the Aquinas Trio coasted through, especially during the opening half, the Mozart Piano Trio in B Flat Major, where the music’s repetitive counterpoint apportioned tree ways, tested this tenet. The second half, Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in D Minor, recognised as one of his greatest chamber works, marked a darker, more sinister side to the Aquinas. One which suited their passionate approach perfectly.
