Hove man convicted after being found drunk and asleep at the wheel

Two men arrested during the annual Christmas crackdown on drink driving in Brighton and Hove have been sentenced in court.

Haidar Bege, 36, was arrested at 7am on Saturday 14 December in Madeira Dive, Brighton, by officers from Sussex Police.

They found him slumped over the steering wheel of his Volkswagen Golf with the lights on and the engine running.

Bege, of Sheridan Terrace, Hove, denied being drunk in charge of a car but was convicted and fined £110. He had 56 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. He was banned from the roads for 10 months.

At Brighton Magistrates’ Court he admitted driving without insurance and without a licence.

But he pleaded not guilty to having cocaine. He was convicted and fined £110.

Bege was also ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge and £450 prosecution costs.

John Allum, 26, of Harbour Way, Shoreham, was arrested in Gloucester Street, Brighton, also on Saturday 14 December.

Officers had been told that he could be driving while under the influence of drugs.

Allum admitted having a class B drug and was ordered to pay a £25 fine, £50 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
